One evening we got it wrong

Everyone writes about what they do well. Here is what we broke — and what changed after.

7 November 2023 · 19:40340 sites · 2 h 15 min

We were updating the network on one of the racks. The work was planned for after midnight, but the engineer decided to start early, because it looked simple.

It was not. A new setting cut half the links and 340 sites went down at the busiest hour — half past seven in the evening, on a weekday.

We brought them back in two hours and fifteen minutes. During that time the phone rang without pause, and we had nothing to say except that we were working on it.

Nobody had been warned in advance, because we did not expect an interruption. That was the second mistake, and the worse one.

What changed since
  • Network changes happen only between 2 and 5 in the morning, no exceptions — not even the “simple” ones
  • Every planned work is announced 48 hours ahead, even when we expect no interruption
  • The status page is updated while the problem is happening, not after it is over
  • A second opinion from another person before touching anything that affects more than one customer

No outsourced support and no night shift in another country. Everyone is here in Plovdiv, and everyone speaks Bulgarian as a first language.

Where the machines are

In Plovdiv, in a data centre where we have our own racks. We do not rent space from another provider and we do not resell somebody else's servers.

Two independent power feeds, plus a diesel generator with fuel for 72 hours
Three different carriers — if one goes down, the others take over
Card entry with an escort. We ourselves do not walk alone among other people's racks
The data never leaves the country. During an audit that is one line instead of explanations

The last row is for comparison: that is where the machines of most foreign hosts sold in Bulgaria actually are.

How we make money

An odd question for an about page, but it explains why we are not the cheapest — and why we will not surprise you.

From the monthly fees

That is all. You pay for the service, we keep it running. There is no other source.

Not from the first year

There is no price that doubles on renewal. It is written on every card, next to the current one.

Not from add-ons you need

Backups, certificate and protection are included. We do not sell something the service cannot work properly without.

That is why we are not the cheapest, and cannot be. Twenty people in Plovdiv cost more than an automated panel and email support from another time zone. If you are after the lowest price, you will find it elsewhere — and it is fair to say so.

Who we are not for

A customer who bought the wrong thing comes back angry. Better to say it now.

Look elsewhere if
You are after the lowest price

There is hosting for a euro a month. It works until it does not — and when it stops, nobody picks up.

Your customers are mostly outside Europe

We are fast for Bulgaria and the Balkans. For an audience in America or Asia, better take hosting there.

You want to host something on the edge of the law

Stolen content, fraudulent shops, sending unwanted mail. We stop those at the first report.

You need something enormous

If the project needs hundreds of machines in several countries, you need a large cloud, not us. We will say so plainly.

How we got here

Five lines instead of a story. Each with a date.

2014Two people and one rented rackThe first customers were friends whose sites we kept for free. First year — 40 sites.
2017Our own racks and a night shiftUntil then the phone was personal and rang at any hour. From that year there is a real duty rota.
2020Everything moved to NVMeOver a year, machine by machine, at night. No customer noticed the move.
2023The evening described aboveOur worst day. Since then the rules for changes are different.
today11,400 sites, twenty peopleWe grow slowly on purpose. Better to handle every customer than to take on more than we can hold.
